UNDP, Ministry of AgricultureSummary:
Eritrea's NAPA highlights that the livestock production system and related livelihood opportunities of pastoralists are highly vulnerable to long-term climate change and variability.
The productive and reproductive efficiencies of the pastoral system have been declining progressively due to a number of issues. These pressures will be compounded by additional stress due rapidly changing climate.
With crop cultivation and animal husbandry accounting for 60% of rural incomes, and with incomes from livestock even more important in specific regions such as the lowlands, climate change will have serious repercussions on rural poverty and well-being.
The objective of this NAPA follow-up project is to enhance adaptive capacity of livestock production systems in the Kerkebet area. The project supports three outcomes: Outcome 1: Livestock management systems piloted that effectively integrate climate change risk management techniques Outcome 2: Technical capacities enhanced among communities and relevant institutions on integrating climate change risks into livestock and water management Outcome 3: Lessons learned about adaptation of livestock management, and a knowledge management system established
