    Summary:

Through FAO's Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) assistance and the Regional Programmes for Food Security (RPFS) recent support has focused on increased food crop production to enhance food security and improve diets. TCP support has been provided for strengthening ecologically-based management of rat in coconut plantations and for growing sigatoka disease resistant banana varieties. Two RPFS projects aimed at increasing local food production through the establishment of nurseries to supply planting materials and training of farmers, and upgrading pig breeding stock and up-skilling farmers on pig feeding using mainly local materials and other proper husbandry techniques.
