Rwanda Environnemental NGOs Forum (RENGOF)Summary:
The CC DARE team conducted an inception mission to Rwanda, jointly with UNDP, the Least Developed Countries Adaptation Fund (LDCF) and the Africa Adaptation Programme for Climate change (AAP), from 4th to 9th July 2009. The objectives of the mission were to increase awareness of the CC DARE programme among main stakeholders involved in climate change adaptation in Rwanda and coordinate efforts with similar initiatives. Consultations were held with national stakeholders and development partners in order to identify how CC DARE may contribute to national adaptation priorities, in the context of other programming initiatives supported by UNEP, UNDP and other bilateral and multilateral development partners. There are two main components under this project targeting Gishwati Area in Nyabihu District: The study aims to identify and analyze effectiveness of the best alternatives for the most vulnerable communities at each zone of the project area to address climate change impacts and build resilience. The study will also conduct additional investigation and analyses of other similar environmental protection activities. Based on this study, a new comprehensive land suitability plan of the whole area will be produced, offering basis for further interventions by initiatives from Government and development partners. Based on the produced Land Suitability and Land Use Plan, communities, particularly farmers located in very risky zones and risky zones would be offered alternative and less risky locations where they can practice innovative and productive soil conservation methods such as agro-forestry and “ZERO TILLAGE” for crop production such as peas. The Land Suitability Plan will also offer the communities the chance to cultivate grasses for livestock feed which will also serve to stabilize the slopes of the mountains in the event of heavy rains and flooding. Thus, the Project would promote income generate and improve the livelihoods of the targeted population while conserving in sustainable manner the entire watershed.
