Summary:

This report seeks to provide an overview of the CC DARE proramme and update countries' project progress.

The CC DARE programme provides demand-driven technical and financial assistance to sub-Saharan African countries that is targeted, flexible and rapid. The assistance is made available to improve the ability of sub-Saharan African countries to remove barriers and create opportunities for integrating climate change adaptation into national development planning and decision-making frameworks. The programme is designed to complement and strengthen ongoing and planned nationally based climate change adaptation and risk management. Emphasis is on small-scale, short-term (3-6 months) activities, and national institutions, NGOs, experts, and the private sector are eligible for requesting support through CC DARE.

The CC DARE programme is coordinated by a team of project staff from UNEP, UNDP, UNEP Risø Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development (URC) and UNEP-DHI Centre for Water and Environment (UDC). There are 27 national projects approved under CC DARE in 15 sub-Saharan African countries. The countries currently involved are: Benin, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Tanzania, Togo and Uganda. Upcoming countries include: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Namibia. 4 countries participated in the pilot phase in 2008: Uganda, Senegal, Tanzania and Benin → 41 proposals received and reviewed, 11 activities currently under implementation.

Current country activities:

  • 3 technical/research activities related to crop efficiency, woodlots and indigenous knowledge
  • 5 on integration of climate change adaptation into planning processes at national, sectoral, and district level
