    Summary:

The development of a resource efficient, cost effective, and environmentally sustainable power sector is essential for enhancing social stability and achieving the Government's 5% growth target for 2009. Good performance of the power sector and high quality electricity services are vital for promoting private investments for diversification of the economy and achieving higher level of economic growth. With annual demand forecast to increase by about 9% for the period 2006-2010, the challenge for FEA is to reduce the dependence on diesel fuel while ensuring sufficient generation, transmission, and distribution capacity to meet growing electricity demand. The Project will support FEA's priorities to meet growing demand from renewable and clean energy sources, and improve the transmission network reliability and stability. By reinforcing and expanding the transmission network, the Project will enable the transmission of power from Fiji Island's indigenous and renewable energy resources to consumers and facilitate integration of new independent power producers (IPPs).

    Expected Outputs:

The Project forms part of FEA’s renewable investment plan to create a resource efficient, cost effective, and environmentally sustainable power sector through the development of indigenous and renewable energy sources and reduced dependence on diesel fuel imports. The Project will strengthen FEA’s transmission network to 1. meet growing demand from renewable and clean energy sources, 2. improve system reliability and quality of supply, 3. facilitate power transfers from renewable energy resources, 4. reduce transmission losses, 5. optimize utilization of existing and planned power plants, and 6. integrate IPP generation into the power system network.
