PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With AusAID funding, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Papua-New Guinea are being assisted to develop an inventory of digitized and un-digitized climate records, to recommend action for the preservation of the records, and where appropriate, to enact immediate action to secure important paper climate records at risk of loss; since then similar activities have also been undertaken in the Cook Islands, Niue, Tonga and Tuvalu to also ensure that their climate data is secure, accessible, and in a form capable of being utilized in the mitigation of the adverse impacts of climate change and variability.
Objectives include:
- Prevent loss of national heritage through the deterioration or destruction of original records;
- Improve the potential for within-country services (e.g. seasonal climate prediction, and mitigation of the potential effects of climate change) to support important social and economic needs and help ensure sustainable development;
- Provide essential resources for climate change research at the national, regional and global levels
- Provide capacity building for PIC meteorological staff in effective records management and data preservation methods.
