    Summary:

    PACC Tuvalu - Climate proofing water management plans for Lofeagai community

    Due to poor groundwater quality in Funafuti much of the people depend heavily on rainwater for consumption and other use making them highly vulnerable to changes in rainfall regimes. And a period of two to three weeks of drought can cause serious water shortage as water levels in many of the water tanks reduce by 50%. The PACC project would focus on enhancing, and where necessary support the development of new water infrastructure to assist the people better cope with droughts. The current water infrastructure design and management is not able to cope with changes in rainfall regimes including its storage, distribution and sustainable use thereby affecting potable water for consumption, agricultural production and industry as well as having adverse effects on village livelihoods.

    The overall PACC project will implement long-term adaptation measures to increase the resilience of a number of key development sectors in the Pacific islands to the impacts of climate change. This objective will be achieved by focusing on adaptation response strategies, policies and measures to bring about this result. The key development sectors this project will focus on are:

    1.      water resources management;
    2.      food production and food security; and
    3.      coastal zone and associated infrastructure (roads and breakwater).

    To ensure sustainability of the project, regional and national adaptation financing instruments will constitute a fourth component of the project
