PACC Tokelau - Integrated coastal community defense and erosion control, and a safe and abundant water supply in view of climate change risks
Tokelau’s tropical marine environment is home to approximately 1600 people and infrastructure already highly vulnerable to natural effects such as tidal surges, drought and tropical cyclones. The acceleration of sea level rise and prolonged drought periods are real and serious impacts of climate change that combine to threaten the co-existence of the entire 12km2 of land area and its native inhabitants. Strengthening the coastal defences of the three atolls in synchronisation with its natural ecosystem, and improving water and sanitation for the people to continue to access abundant clean water for healthier living, is what the PACC+ project aims to achieve for Tokelau.
The overall PACC project will implement long-term adaptation measures to increase the resilience of a number of key development sectors in the Pacific islands to the impacts of climate change. This objective will be achieved by focusing on adaptation response strategies, policies and measures to bring about this result. The key development sectors this project will focus on are:
1. water resources management;
2. food production and food security; and
3. coastal zone and associated infrastructure (roads and breakwater).To ensure sustainability of the project, regional and national adaptation financing instruments will constitute a fourth component of the project
