    Summary:

    ###### Background

    The project will focus on the communities of Oconi and Pie de la Cuesta, in the municipality of Saipina, in Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. These local communities are primarily agricultural (growing potatoes, tomatoes, onions, leafy vegetables) and are highly dependent on Cherimoya cultivation as a source of livelihood (as developed and supported by the PROINPA1 project).

    The project area experiences a distinct rainy and dry season, with one sowing season in the wet season and one sowing season dependent on the river-water irrigation in the dry season. Climate changes, which include increasing temperatures, increasingly intense yet erratic rainfall, and more marked seasonality, are already becoming apparent in this part of Bolivia. All these factors increase the risk of floods and droughts which in turn seriously worsen the baseline land degradation. As land degradation increases, the farmers of these communities need to farm new lands creating a clime-driven cycle of degradation leading to deforestation, and further degradation. In addition, the changing hydrology threatens the recent work of PROINPA1 to improve the incomes of the community through promotion of the Cherimoya cultivation.

    Project Components:

    The UNDP CBA project will design community-driven, climate-resilient agroforestry systems to improve the availability of water for irrigation and human consumption among the rural families in the communities located in the areas vulnerable to climate change in the Municipality of Vallegrande. The project will improve the cherimoya production systems (and made more resilient to climactic pressures.

    Expected Outputs:

    * 1.) Completing biophysical and socio-economic studies for the design and implementation of improved orchards;

    * 2.) Establishing and/or improving the cherimoya plots by using appropriate soil conservation practices and soil management (such as terraces, contour planting, and agroforestry);

    * 3.) Designing improved irrigation systems which will be more efficient and adapted to changing water availability. In addition, communities will be trained on understanding climate change adaptation measures, and on the implementation of improved cherimoya/agroforestry systems. Lastly, the project will integrate climate risk management into the local policy frameworks adopted in the municipality of Saipina.
