    Summary:

    The Fiji Bio-fuels project aims to contribute to climate change mitigation. This involves undertaking the next phase in the development of a bio-fuels industry in Fiji by preparing a set of documents for the Fiji Government to act on priority activities. Brought about by the decline in EU’s preferential prices for sugar, increasing fuel prices and the consecutive increase in demand for energy, there is a need for alternative and cheaper fuel supply. Coconut oil and ethanol from sugar are great potentials to meet the energy demand for Fiji, with environmental, economical and social benefits. This preparatory phase of the Fiji Bio-fuel Industry Development Programme focuses on further establishment of priority areas of intervention by various stakeholders in light of future implementation.

    Main deliverables include:

    1. National Energy Dialogue concept and project proposal

    2. Bio-fuels Blends Testing Programme project document;

    3. Bio-fuels for electricity generation in Viti Levu strategy;

    4. Coconut oil use strategy document for Vanua Levu;

    5. Action plan for Partnerships Strategy;

    6. Terms of Reference for the Biofuels Coordinating Committee;

    7. Capacity Building Programme project document; and

    8. EU Sugar Industry Diversification project proposal.
