    Summary:

    The main objectives of the Domestic Maritime Support Project and Technical Support Program (DMSP) are to improve the efficiency, safety and reliability of the transport sector in Solomon Islands, thereby contributing positively to economic growth and poverty reduction, particularly in the rural areas. The Project will work with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) to improve maritime infrastructure and marine transport by supporting a franchising scheme to improve inter-island shipping services to remote areas, rehabilitating maritime infrastructure, particularly rural wharves, and by building institutional capacity to plan, manage, monitor and maintain transport infrastructure and services throughout the country.

    Project Components:

    1. Rehabilitation or reconstruction of about 12 wharves to good condition by December 2011
    2. Engagement of Franchise Shipping Scheme (FSS) management by July 2009
    3. Design of FSS finalized and tenders called by December 2009
    4. Regular service operating on 7 rural routes by January 2010, continuing for four years
    5. Implementation assistance provided from March 2009-December 2018

    Expected Outputs:

    1. Rural Wharves constructed and or rehabilitated
    2. Franchise Shipping Scheme established and operational
