This assistance is the second of it kind and is a replica of the Disease free Atoll Banana project carried out in the Marshall Islands. Through FAO's Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) assistance and the Regional Programmes for Food Security (RPFS) recent support has focused on increased food crop production to enhance food security and improve diets. TCP support has been provided for growing sigatoka disease resistant banana varieties and a RPFS project aimed at increasing local food production through the establishment of nurseries to supply planting materials and training of farmers. Additional technical assistance has been provided for establishing a food processing unit.
Objectives are:
1. To promote and mass-produce pest and disease free banana plantlets through the use of tissue culture disease free material.
2. To train farmers in sustainable management of atoll banana production through narrow pit-planting methodology and proper organic bulking management.
3. To meet the household food requirements and enhance quality on the local market
