Summary:
UNDP's Climate Change Strategy promotes the 'Integration of climate change into UN and UNDP development assistance at the global, regional and national levels'. As part of this, UNDP's Environment & Energy Group developed a $1.2 million project funded by the Government of Spain. The project supports activities in five countries: Colombia, Cape Verde, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Malawi throughout 2008-2011. It is implemented in collaboration with UNDP's Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) and UNEP-Risoe.
The objective of the project is to support UNDP Country Offices, UN Country Teams and partner countries themselves in integrating climate change risk considerations into national development plans. The project involves evaluating UN programming documents (UNDAF, and other multi-agency programmes and projects) and national development plans (PRSPs, and other projects and strategies) for climate risks and opportunities, and proposing response options to manage these risks. The project team then organizes workshops to build capacity on climate change and raise awareness on the importance of integrating climate change risks into development activities. Lessons learned from all five countries will be synthesised and disseminated widely through the Adaptation Learning Mechanism (ALM) and other networks.
