On 15 December 2009, a joint meeting took place between Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Development Minister Dirk Niebel with the heads of state and government of eight Pacific island states. Minister Westerwelle underlined the long tradition of relations between Germany and the Pacific states, while Federal Development Minister Niebel announced, in this context, that funding for the regional programme ‘Adapting to Climate Change in the Pacific Islands Region’ would be increased by 10 million euro. The programme, implemented by GTZ, is designed to help the island states tackle the challenges of climate change. After the Berlin meeting, the heads of state and government travelled on to Copenhagen to attend the climate summit.
