The second volume of the UNU-EHS Graduate Research Series, written by Philine Oft, investigates the livelihood systems of farmers in the region of Piura, Peru, including influencing strategies and frameworks. This PhD dissertation examines existing coping and adaptation strategies with a special focus on financial service schemes, such as agricultural micro-credits or insurance funds. Coping and adaptation as well as financial risk management strategies all can contribute to increase the resilience of rural livelihoods.

     CLICO is a three year research project funded by the European Commission.

    Expected Outputs:

     CLICO pursues the following two objectives:

    • To understand and model the relationships between hydro-climatic hazards, climate change vulnerability, human security and conflict, on the basis of theoretically-informed, comparative empirical research.
    • To map international and national policies for security and adaptation in water resources and hazard management, and develop a policy model for security against hydro-climatic hazards (“hydro-security”) in the region, applicable to the UN, EU and national states.

Rice has long been Thailand’s traditional food crop and the country’s main export product. Though declining in relative importance, it still occupies about 55% of the total arable land . Over 80% of the Thai population eats rice as their main meal, with annual per capita consumption totalling 100.8 kg.

The world too, depends on the country’s rice.
