Summary:

The UNDP Community Water Initiative has funded successful projects in some of the most vulnerable communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America. Using a broad range of innovative approaches, these projects have helped increase the capacities of local people to participate in developing their own solutions to local water resource problems. By providing modest funds, CWI has helped generate large rewards for the communities in terms of water security, natural resources management, and social well being.

Volume:
Issues Brief #4
Pages:

Summary:

Cities and the people who live in them account for more than 80 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, more than 80 percent of the overall annual global costs of adaptation to climate change are estimated to be borne by urban areas. This Issues Brief looks at potential financing opportunities and costs of mitigation and adaptation in the urban context. Wide-ranging potential sources for finance for climate action are described, and suggestions are made for moreeffective responses to climate investment challenges in cities.

Integrating Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change into Sustainable Development Policy Planning and Implementation in Southern and Eastern Africa

  • Project details

Floating Houses and Mosquito Nets: Emerging Climate Change Adaptation Strategies Around the World

This study, compiled by Meister Consultants Group, Inc., analyzes examples of climate change adaptation strategies and measures from around the world. By highlighting adaptation efforts in 16 countries across the globe the study shows how adaptation strategies can be successful. The featured case studies are from developing and emerging countries such as Bangladesh, Tanzania and Brazil, and are also from industrialized countries such as Great Britain, Netherlands, Switzerland Australia. As mentioned in Dr. Mojib Latif's preface, "[t]he great variety of examples and the identification of factors for a successful policy are helpful guidelines for all who are active in the climate sector" (Floating Houses and Mosquito Nets, 2009, p. 3).

Africa Adaptation Programme - Supporting Integrated and Comprehensive Approaches to Climate Change Adaptation in Africa

Author(s):
Africa Adaptation Programme
Year:
January 2010
Summary:

The Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP) has been designed to support the long-term efforts of targeted countries to further develop their capability to successfully identify, design and implement holistic adaptation and disaster risk reduction programmes that are aligned with national development priorities. In this regard AAP is not a traditional adaptation programme per se – but a strategic initiative, aimed at creating an environment for more informed and capable adaptation decisions and practice in each country.

The brochures below (in English, French and Japanese) provide a brief outline of the Programme, as well as a snapshot of the key priorities identified by each country under AAP

Climate-proofing Energy Systems

Summary:

This publication explains why a metric to measure the vulnerability and resilience of energy system to climate change is needed. The publication proposes a methodology and provides two sets of indicators: one to measure the extent of vulnerability within a particular energy system and a second to identify possible adaptation options.

These indicators are applied to ten Sub-Saharan countries. The indicator results and possible adaptation measures are outlined.
