At the start of the project more than 575,000 homes (71.7 per cent) in Bolivia's rural areas had no electricity - a sign of poverty and social exclusion. Without electricity the population is denied equal opportunities of economic and social development.

Eight solar street lights are to be installed at intersections along the Compact Road that circles the main island of Babeldaob. These lights will improve the safety of driving along the road, as currently the road is unlit. The locations have been identified by the Government, and the lights are expected to be installed by May 2010 and maintained by the Energy Office. The project aims to improve energy efficiency & solar energy grid systems.
Expected Outputs:
Eight solar street lights are to be installed at intersections along the Compact Road that circles the main island of Babeldaob.

Asian Development Bank, Fiji Electric Authority (FEA)Summary:
FEA, through its land department, has identified landowners and has obtained their agreement to the investigation activities for the proposed core subprojects. To ensure compliance with ADB's safeguard polices on the environment, involuntary resettlement, and indigenous peoples, the TA will review FEA's existing work and the Government's procedures and, if necessary, conduct supplementary detailed field surveys for core subprojects, including access roads.
Project Components:
1. Review of the Fiji Electricity Authority's (FEA) prioritized renewable investment plan to meet electricity demand forecasts, including least cost and sensitivity analysis; 2. Preparation of pre-feasibility studies for prioritized subprojects under the expansion program; 3. Assessment and projection of FEA's financial performance; 4. Financial and economic analysis of the investment program, including risk analysis; 5. Compliance with ADB's safeguard policies; 6. Climate change adaptation analysis; and 8. Carbon development mechanism screening process for FEA's investment program.

The Afulilo Hydropower Project was first initiated in the early 1980's when consultations were undertaken with affected people. Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $5.3 million loan to the Government of Samoa in December 1986 as co-financing for the project. Other cofinanciers were the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, the European Union and Australian Agency for International Development. Construction of the project commenced in 1990. Continuous production of electricity commenced in August 1993.
