BACKGROUND:
The South Pacific Sea Level and Climate Monitoring Project (SPSLCMP) was developed in 1991 as an Australian Government response to concerns raised by member countries of the South Pacific Forum over the potential impacts of human-induced global warming on climate and sea levels in the Pacific region.
Its primary goal is to generate an accurate record of variance in long-term sea level for the South Pacific and to establish methods to make these data readily available and usable by Pacific Island countries.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective of this 4-year project is to provide technical support to SOPAC (and in collaboration with SPREP) on the development of National Action Plans (NAP) for mainstreaming DRM into development and budgetary processes including: facilitation of in country engagement; supporting government task-forces in formulating, writing and costing the NAP.

2. Implementation plans with allocated responsibilities, time-frames, estimated costs and monitoring and evaluation indicators

Fourteen Pacific Island Countries working with SOPAC have successfully submitted the Project Identification Form (PIF) to the Global Environment Facility for the Sustainable Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) project.

Centres of Excellence for Atoll Agriculture Research and Development

Summary:
The Centres of Excellence for Atoll Agriculture Research and Development in the Pacific will become a focal points for Pacific scientists working on the development of technologies to help atoll farmers increase their productivity. The project is implemented by the SPC Land Resource Division and supports documentation and promotion traditional food production, preparation and preservation. The project also will undertake action research and extension activities to address issues such as poor soil, irrigation and limited resource base of coral atolls.

TeleFood projects around the world have been making the difference in the lives of small-scale farming communities and given hope to numerous children and women who did not have the needed livelihood supplies. They have been designed to provide families and communities the tools necessary to increase the quantity and variety of their food production. Projects categories range from crop production to fish and animal production, including support to school garden initiatives and apiculture. The budget of each project does not exceed US$ 10 000 and a duration of 12 months.

DSAP originated from the previous Pacific Regional Agriculture Programme (PRAP) projects. PRAP projects made significant progress in addressing some of the problems in Pacific agricultural systems through the projects - Farming Systems in Lowlands of the Pacific Regional Agricultural Program (PRAP 1) and Atoll Farming Systems (PRAP 6). DSAP builds upon the foundation of PRAP projects 1 and 6 and also attempts to address problems faced during their implementation.

The proposed PIREP will facilitate the promotion with the Pacific Island Coduntries (PICs) of the widespread implementation and ultimately, commercialization of Renewable Energy technologies (RETs). The establishment of an enabling environment conducive to the region-wide adoption and commercialization of RETs would involve the design, development and implementation of appropriate policies, strategies and interventions addressing the fiscal, financial, regulatory, market, technical and information barriers to RE development and utilization.
