Potential for agronomical enhancement of millet yield and soil buffering capacity through Jatropha

Summary:
This project is intending to develop with small scale farmers, appropriate manure out of oilcake of Jatropha curcas in order to:
a) enhance millet productivity;
b) reduce soil moisture stress and
c) better control soil temperature variation. For this purpose participatory approach is adopted to compare the effects of two fertilizers and 5 methods of fertilizer application. Measurements on soil moisture and soil temperature variation are carried out and millet agronomic parameters as well.

Summary:
The impacts of climate change in Uganda has affected agricultural productivity and resulted in persisting food insecurity for a large number of families.This project aims to improve the food security of smaller holder farmers in the Iganga and Jinja districts through creating awareness about the causes and effects of climate change within 4 farming communities and 16 schools, and motivating stakeholders to mitigate and adapt to changing climate conditions.

This project seeks to create an awareness of climate change vulnerabilities and adaptation strategies among the Lukwanga communities. It will also work to strengthen the capacity of the Lukwanga Community Knowledge Centre as a reservoir for climate change adaptation information by using multimedia tools focussing on indigenous knowledge systems.
