    Summary:

    Hundreds of millions of people in urban areas across the world will be affected by climate change. The vulnerability of human settlements in this new urban era will increase through rising sea levels, inland floods, frequent and stronger tropical cyclones, periods of increased heat and the spread of diseases. Climate change may negatively impact on the infrastructure and worsen the access to basic urban services and the quality of life in cities. Most affected are the urban poor – the slum dwellers in developing countries.

    ##### Approach
    The Cities in Climate Change Initiative targets cities in developing and least developed countries. It emphasises good governance, responsibility, leadership and practical initiatives for the communities and their citizens. It builds on the well-tested Environmental Planning and Management process which is suited to address climate change issues within the city by a wide host of actors. A set of tools will be developed to support city-leaders and practitioners in addressing the impact of climate change (adaptation) and to help reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions (mitigation). This will be supported with technological and financial options as they emerge from the needs of cities.

    Expected Outputs:

    * The setting up of global, regional, national and city to city networks of national and local government associations, non-governmental bodies, universities, the private sector, and UN organizations addressing climate change;
    * Localization and implementation of national adaptation and mitigation strategies;
    * The strengthening of capacities of local authorities to integrate climate change concerns in local and city wide planning and budgeting for cost-effective policy responses;
    * The strengthening of the capacities of local government training institutes to provide climate change training for local governments.

Summary:

The Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP) has been designed to support the long-term efforts of targeted countries to further develop their capability to successfully identify, design and implement holistic adaptation and disaster risk reduction programmes that are aligned with national development priorities. In this regard AAP is not a traditional adaptation programme per se – but a strategic initiative, aimed at creating an environment for more informed and capable adaptation decisions and practice in each country.

The brochures below (in English, French and Japanese) provide a brief outline of the Programme, as well as a snapshot of the key priorities identified by each country under AAP

Potential for agronomical enhancement of millet yield and soil buffering capacity through Jatropha

    This project is intending to develop with small scale farmers, appropriate manure out of oilcake of Jatropha curcas in order to:

    a) enhance millet productivity;

    b) reduce soil moisture stress and

    c) better control soil temperature variation. For this purpose participatory approach is adopted to compare the effects of two fertilizers and 5 methods of fertilizer application. Measurements on soil moisture and soil temperature variation are carried out and millet agronomic parameters as well.

Summary:

This publication explains why a metric to measure the vulnerability and resilience of energy system to climate change is needed. The publication proposes a methodology and provides two sets of indicators: one to measure the extent of vulnerability within a particular energy system and a second to identify possible adaptation options.

These indicators are applied to ten Sub-Saharan countries. The indicator results and possible adaptation measures are outlined.

    Project Rationale and Objectives _(as outlined in the Project Document of 25 July 2003)_ The Least Developed Countries (LDCs) represent the poorest and weakest segment of the international community. The economic and social development of these countries represents a major challenge because of a series of vulnerabilities and constraints, such as limited human, institutions and productive LDCs themselves, as well as for their development partners.

    Project Components:

    To train Francophone NAPA teams to produce NAPAs of good quality.

    Expected Outputs:

    21 Country teams are adequately trained to carry out their NAPA work. The three key outcomes are: * Informed representatives of the Francophone LDCs delegations and increased awareness about the application of the NAPA guidelines from a substantive point of view; * Increased participatory discussion among the various players involved and their proactive commitment to the NAPA creation process. * Increased understanding of Francophone LDCs UNFCCC Focal Points about successful GEF NAPA projects implementation/process.

Background

The Climate Change Screening Matrix provides guidance and a check-list for use by field-mission representatives and Danish development partners. As part of the Climate Change Screening Matrix, climate change is integrated as part of wider “environment” as a crosscutting issue. Testing on sector programmes in 17 countries. There are results available for Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Kenya, Mali, Nepal, Niger.
