With growing experience in “anticipatory” adaptation — where the risks of climate change are managed proactively rather than reactively — there is a need to share this knowledge, so that all stakeholders can benefit.

ABOUT THE ADAPTATION LEARNING MECHANISM

A collaborative knowledge-sharing platform

Adaptation to climate change is a growing priority for development agencies, governments and vulnerable communities. However, capacity and awareness are often limited, and experiences have yet to be widely shared. The ALM project will draw from experiences on the ground, featuring tools and practical guidance to meet the needs of developing countries. Seeking to provide stakeholders with a common platform for sharing and learning, the ALM will also complement the wide range of adaptation knowledge networks and initiatives already underway. For example, the ALM is collaborating with the Nairobi Work Programme, particularly the 'Methods and Tools' and 'Planning and Practices' areas of work, and the interactive weADAPT platform.

The US$1 million, three-year ALM project was launched in late 2007. It is funded by the Global Environment Facility, with co-financing from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Institut de l’Énergie et de l’Environnement de la Francophonie. The United Nations Development Programme is implementing the project in partnership with The World Bank and the United Nations Environment Programme. MORE ABOUT PROJECT PARTNERS >

The ALM will develop tools and resources to support:
1. Adaptation practices – what can be done to adapt to climate change on the ground?
2. Integration of climate change risks and adaptation into development policy, planning and operations – how can policies and plans support adaptation over time?
3. Capacity building – how can people be better assisted in becoming equipped for adapting to climate change?
