Caption:

The effects of climate change on Laucala Island, which is located right next to the mouth of the Rewa River, is gradually taking its toll. Sea levels have risen and begun to reclaim the land, certain species of fish have disappeared, and homes lost. The sea level comes in slowly and has already reclaimed more than 20 feet of land. Landmarks which were once seen 15 to 20 years ago have now disappeared beneath sea waters. A fish known as the “cinani” or “white bait” has disappeared in the past 10 years.
